Alleygating has been a great success in Grangetown. I've been campaigning for gates for the lanes in Bargoed Street for nearly a year. These are difficult times financially, so it's difficult to say how many lanes can be gated in the area.
There are problems in the area with litter and anti-social behaviour. I raised specifically the following issues:
- Flytipping and litter, and a pothole in the lane at the back of Clydach Street, running parallel to Corporation Road;
- Ghat consumption and youth congregating in the lane running parallel to Taff Embankment;
- Litter in the lane at the back of Abercynon Street
- Litter and prostitution in the lane at the back of Taff Terrace
I hope these lanes can be gated some time in the future. However, I have also been made aware that there might be issues with access for disabled people to the garages. This needs appropriate consideration so that the needs of all can be guaranteed.

Hello Francesca,
I'm glad to hear that you have been championing the cause of alleygating in Grangetown. This post shows some promise in reaching the goal of alleygating being put in place around Bargoed Street.
I recently moved away from my parents house in the area affected and I can certainly agree with the reasons stated in the post. For years we have had people intruding into our garage and stealing items accessed via the lane. In addition, although it may be anecdotal, the lanes may also be harbouring drug abuse and exchange.
We were quoted recently that gates have been implemented sooner, but there was an insufficient number of incidents recorded by the police to take any action. Is there any truth in this statement?
Once again I commend your efforts here and you have my full support.
Joe
The official figures do not show a high level of antisocial behaviour, which is really good. However, gates can be helpful in deterring refuse dumping. They are very popular but also expensive so it's not straightforward to 'make it to the list'. I asked for the case for Bargoed Street to be reviewed and for the other lanes in the area to be considered.
