Works underway on Taffs Mead Embankment Tunnel

Improvements to the rail bridge on Taffs Mead Embankment are underway. The Lib Dem-run Council has recently completed works, using funding from the student accommodation development of the 'Bakery'.
Bollards have been placed to close the tunnel off to traffic to guarantee safety. The road under the bridge was completely resurfaced.

Lib Dem councillor, Francesca Montemaggi, said: "The tunnel has greatly improved. There have been improvements to the bridge structure, including graffiti removal, painting and pigeon proofing.
"I have been pressing for the improvement works to go ahead and I'm glad this is happening. I have raised a number of issues in the past that are being addressed.

"The pavement on Pendyris Street is finally open for use and unobstructed by the development works. Now that the tunnel is closed off to traffic, it is no longer possible for cars to park illegally."

"I have also been told that the council has been working with the developers to further improve Pendyris Street. This includes the widening of the pavement and resurfacing of the road, build-out parking bays.
I am particularly glad that they are finally agreeing the plans for the provision of street trees. This will make the area look nicer and tidier."

Obviously it's better than before, but i am still staggered that it wasn't possible to remove the steps on the Tudor St side. This would have enabled the building of a second seperate slipway for cyclists and avoid them having to fly past within inches of hapless pedestrians making their way back from town.

In my view this is the most poorly enginered section of the Taff Trail in Cardiff. It merges cyclists together with large numbers of unsuspecting pedestrians into a narrow, sloping, chokepoint. Although the risk of really serious injuries from collision are more apparent than real, ISTM that the highways engineers had a golden opportunity to tackle the problem - but took their eye off the ball!
