Lib Dems call for improvements to Paget Street Junction

Lib Dem councillor Francesca Montemaggi has been campaigning for improvements to the Paget Street/ Penarth Road junction.
"The Paget Street/Penarth Road junction is a five-road junction. This means more traffic. I believe the traffic situation has seriously deteriorated in the past year.
"Motorists drive up to Tesco, they violate the one-way system and park on the double-yellow lines outside Tesco obstructing traffic from Penarth Road or Clare Road. When buses come along the junction is clogged up.
"I have met with officers and I had a site visit. Following my action, the Council has added better signs for the one-way system. They are now drawing up plans to make the junction safer."

Totally agree.

Putting a Tesco there was always going to invite all kinds of trouble on the roads nearby. Being the heart of Grangetown, this junction also lies on the main route from Cardiff to Penarth, as well as on the main route from Cardiff Bay to the West of Cardiff. We should be giving it much more attention, especially now that some of the traffic from the St. Mary's Street closure has spilled into the area.

The parking situation on Corporation Road and Paget Street next to the Tesco is causing all kinds of problems for queing traffic and making life for buses an absolute hell.

On a personal note, I still can't see why Tesco should have ever been put there; not only is it damaging to our local economy including local traders and small businesses, but it has led to the further problems of illegal parking, illegal road entry, increased traffic. Time and time again there are large groups of people (not necessarily youths) who congregate outside the store and can intimidate passers-by.

Not a helpful final point - but merely an observation now that the Tesco has taken ahold of our beloved Grangetown.

By the way, good luck for the upcoming election. I always love the time of year when I see the party leaflets posted through my door!

I made the point in planning committee that the junction was the wrong place for Tesco. Sometimes, a supermarket can improve the local area by providing different products, so you're more likely to do your shopping there but also use the shops nearby rather than drive to a big shopping centre. My grudge is the traffic and the parking. I hope a better design might make clearer that it's a one-way street!!
